words of Jim Elliott

Every so often I pick up and reread portions of Shadow of the Almighty, which consists mostly of Jim Elliott’s journals and letters. It never fails to convict me–this was a man who strove daily to be completely abandoned to God, and how mightily he was used! Here are some of my favorite bits:

The great mistake is in preaching to our fellow-believers ‘Come out from among them and be ye separate,’ with the suggestion that they should come out to us and be separate. It struck me forcibly that only Almighty God can make that exhortation–for only He is above and beyond all our petty walls of party separation. Our exhorting should conform to Hebrews 13:13, ‘Let us go forth unto Him.’

Trying to ‘be a help’ even has a smell of good works in it, for it is not pure. Our motive is only to be–do nothing, know nothing, act nothing–just to be a sinful bit of flesh, born of a Father’s love.

I must not think it strange if God takes in youth those whom I would have kept on earth till they were older. God is peopling Eternity, and I must not restrict Him to old men and women.
