tomorrow you’ll be walking on the sun

It was eighty, so I wanted to take advantage of the gorgeous sun. On went the tshirt and knee-length skirt, on went the uber-cool shoes. I was off to conquer the world! Or at least the arm’s-length list of eraands in my vintage purse. Sashaying along, hair swinging, enjoying vitamin D after too many months inside. Getting compliments from random strangers on my shoes. Old men are staring a little too long, causing their purple-haired escorts to elbow them sharply in the ribs. Trunk engines are revving as they growl by. And as I stroll into Wal-Mart, footloose and fancy-free, a complete stranger informs me, “On a scale of one to ten, you’re an eleven.”
It was the shoes. I promise it’s the shoes.
